Cartier Serial Numbers Year: How They Changed Over Time and What to Look For

It is important to note, however, that when Aldo Cipullo started making these in the seventies, the Love Bracelet did not come with serial numbers. So it is important to be extra vigilant when buying vintage Cartier Love jewelry pieces to avoid fake pieces.

Unlike a unique serial number, Rolex reference numbers (also known as model numbers) are shared across watches. Among other things, the first few numbers tell you what particular collection a Rolex watch belongs to.

Cartier Serial Numbers Year

Most Cartier models have two important sets of numbers. The longer number is the serial number which is unique to every watch created. Current models have serial numbers that are 8 characters long and consist of 6 numbers and 2 letters. Modern Cartier watches also have a 4-digit number that is the case reference.

This is represented by the first two digits, followed by the year of manufacture and the last five digits. A serial number of 123450, for example, indicates that the watch was made in 2012 and was the 345th production in that year.

Reading Cartier serial numbers is not as complicated as it may seem. The first two digits will represent the year the piece was made. For example, if the serial number begins with the numbers 18, it was made in 2018. The next two numbers are the month of production, and the last four digits are the production sequence number. Knowing the serial number of your Cartier watch can be beneficial if you ever need to have it serviced. It is also important to keep a record of the serial number because it will help to identify and authenticate your Cartier watch.

Secondly, although Jose’s research is very thorough, there are limits. His work highlights the difficulty in arriving at definitive, inarguable conclusions when combing through the murky world of vintage watches. Some of his posts are pretty conclusive, but where they concern possible fakes or franken-watches, often you’re left with a lot of strong evidence and persuasive argument, but no smoking gun. Take this post from 2021, which rigorously combs through Patek Philippe serial numbers, makes a very convincing point about the state of the dial, but for its coup de grace (the weirdness concerning the extract from the archives), relies on the rumour that decades ago, individuals at Patek Philippe were bribed to falsify the paperwork. Very few editors will indulge a 3000-word story that doesn’t quite have a rock-solid argument at its core and, to boot, may well get you a letter from some of Geneva’s best-paid lawyers.

In the times I bough my old film Leica cameras (own and M3 and an M4-2) Leica used to publish the serial numbers of the cameras produced, so, you could find out when yours had been produced, but since M8 this good habit stopped and now, with this continuous changes of letters and figures accompanying the model, is really difficult to know how old the camera you want to buy is 2ff7e9595c
